S. S. "American" beyond the islands of Kouhau, Kukok and proceded to Taikam where there was a junk at anchor. They brought the steamer close in shore dropped both anchors breaking afterwards the steam-pipe connecting the windlass.

They hailed the junk, which came alongside and with help of the junk and crew and our steam winches (which they understood to work) removed the spoil and sailed away. This was nearly 4 a.m.

It was reported that they stole from the passengers (cattle and pig dealers) some $19,000 and some little other money, effects and blankets from the crew.

It is further stated that one of the pirates talk- -ing on board said this attack was already prepared one month ago and that one or two of them had already planned several trips to observe the habits on board and position of strong rooms amount of money etc.

It was only at 6.30 a.m. that by hand power we could heave up and proceed to Macao where we arrived at 1 p.m. report- -ing the matter to the Harbour Authorities who held us for 3 days

investigating the matter.
